> Pictures & Essence of discourses on the Bhagavad Gita
All the words in this section
are as spoken by Swamiji. Reading them carefully and trying to understand
them deeply will bring about a radical change within us. When we
transform inside, the outside transforms automatically.
Swamiji spoke on the Srimad Bhagavad Gita from Sep
4 - 21, 2005 at The Malibu Temple, Los Angeles, USA. Following is the synopsis of the 18 discourses delivered on 18 days, one chapter of the Gita everyday.
Here Krishna is giving the Ultimate secret.
Once you know this secret, there is no difference between
you and the Divine. Disciples often try to achieve the status
of the Master instead of the state. State is different from
status. The state is to be achieved, not the status.
If you only see the status, you will always get caught in
jealousy. The state of the Master is a source of inspiration
for you. If you only try to achieve the status, the state
will never be achieved. It’s like chasing a shadow;
you try to grab it but you can’t. But if you walk
the path of the state, it will simply follow you.
The
only difference between an Enlightened Master and a man
is, the Enlightened Master is awake, while the man is asleep.
Whether you believe it or not, accept it or not, want it
or not, you are God. You can sleep as long as you
choose to.
Because Arjuna is not jealous of Krishna,
he proves that he has the maturity for Krishna to share
the Ultimate Secret. This knowledge is the secret education,
because it gives the direct knowledge of realization that
is everlasting. A religion should be characterized by three
important qualities: It should describe the goal of life.
Secondly, it should give the clear path to achieve the goal.
And lastly it should give you the joy to follow the path.
The biggest secret is that it should be joyfully performed!
Why should this knowledge be a secret?
The Ultimate knowledge is not for the masses. It can be
harmful for the person who receives it if he is not spiritually
mature. If you tell a criminal that he is God, he will misuse
this knowledge to justify his immoral actions, whereas a
person who realizes he is God will radiate compassion, innocence
and simplicity. Simplicity is the secret of greatness.
Krishna declares that He is God. This is
a secret because it cannot be delivered to a person who
is not yet mature. God cannot be given as instant coffee.
You can’t just have God instantly. A maturation process
is necessary. Actually the more you hurry this process,
the greater the delay. The very hurrying will postpone the
experience. It will not let you relax.
All our scriptures are called Upanishads.
The word ‘Upanishad’ means ‘sitting’,
because it can only be taught to a person who is sitting
and waiting for the Master. In the Indian system, we give
great respect to knowledge. In the East, there is no economic
commitment required for education. In fact, often, food
and accommodation are provided free for students, for those
seeking spiritual knowledge. But you must commit psychologically.
In the West, the opposite is true. An economic commitment
is a prerequisite, but no psychological commitment is invested.
This is why education in the East goes to the right person,
to someone who is deeply interested, and the quality of
the education of that person is assured.
A small story: A man has a wheezing problem.
He goes to the doctor and the doctor says, “Sit under
the cold water tap for two hours.” The man is shocked
and says, “If I do that, I will surely get asthma.”
The doctor says, “Yes, that is what I want. I know
how to treat only asthma.”
When you have a deep psychological commitment,
you will experience. This knowledge is the king of secrets.
It is the purest knowledge because it gives you the direct
realization: Perception of the Self.
The ultimate goal is Enlightenment. The
result is everlasting and joyfully performed. When we have
a glimpse of this state, after a while we come down from
that state. What can we do to attain the everlasting state
that is Enlightenment? Krishna answers this: Open your whole
Being. Just understand this Ultimate Secret: niyama
yama: adding understanding to your Being, to your Inner
Space; then you experience the formless Energy. Even though
there are so many forms, there is only one Energy. Here
He is talking about Quantum Spirituality.
When you understand that everything is
Energy, fear will be taken away from your Being. Energy
takes many forms: earth, fire, water, air and akasha
(ether). We can see the effects and manifestations
of pollution of the first four but we cannot see it for
akasha. For example, we see the effects of water
in the New Orleans floods. The Akasha is disturbed
by our collective negativity. Countries that suffer from
depression are an effect of collective negative energy in
the akasha. If the akasha is polluted,
the whole world is affected. Space is energy. Space is not
just emptiness, it is energy.
The whole universe is pure intelligence.
It can respond to your thoughts. The moment you understand
that you are taken care of by an intelligent universe, you
can relax completely. This one understanding, when it penetrates
your Being, is enough. You will no longer feel insecure
or concerned by any issues. You will experience a deep peace
and have the confidence to live fully. You will know that
you are a part of this cosmic intelligence and will live
blissfully.
Bliss is not just a mood. It is your very
Consciousness, your Being. The blissful mood will come and
go. If it comes and goes, you are having initial glimpses
of bliss. Once you experience the real bliss, it is eternal,
everlasting.
Krishna says, “Those who have become
me, experience Eternal Consciousness. I carry what they
lack and preserve what they have.” No other incarnation
has declared this. It is not just an assurance. It is a
promise. You will have everything and nothing will be lost.
The Western mind naturally asks, “How can I have all
this by meditating?” Quantum physics now clearly proves
that matter is energy - that it is your thoughts that create
the world in which you live.
A college professor, using plants, conducted
a series of experiments. Three rose bushes were placed in
three rooms with the same physical environmental conditions.
In the first room he used beautiful, positive words: “Don't
worry I will take care of you and protect you, you don't
need thorns.” In the second room he used neither negative
nor positive words with the plant. In the third room he
created negative energy with his words: “You are ugly.
You are not wanted.” For twenty-one days, these statements
were repeated. The first plant grew to twice its size and
had no thorns. The second plant just presented normal growth.
The third plant actually died. Eleven times this experiment
was conducted with the same results. He proved extensively
that Existence responds to your thoughts.
Don't think that you can think what you
want in your inner life and not see it manifest in the outer
life. They are one and the same. The outer is an expression
of the inner. We create our whole Existence through our
thoughts. We attract like-minded individuals as friends
and colleagues. When we become spiritual, we can no longer
relate to those who think more materialistically.
You create the universe from the angle
of your vision. You project your world and see it through
the slide or filter of your mentality. If your thought changes,
the whole universe changes. If you feel alone, you will
see enemies. If you feel part of the Whole, you will relax.
You have the power to create miracles in your life.
Once when I was staying in Haridwar in
India, I fell very sick and was unable to even walk. Suddenly
this sannyasi came and took care of me for three
or four days until I was well. I became acquainted with
him. He told me that he was staying at a nearby ashram,
and that his name was Shankara. I noticed that he wore a
diamond pen on his dress and asked him why he wore it. He
said that one of the devotees had given it to him and that
as he particularly liked it and he had decided to keep it.
After a few days he stopped coming. I decided that I should
go and see him. I went to the ashram and asked for Shankara
Swamiji. I was told, “Who are you talking about? In
our ashram we have only one Shankara. Go to the temple and
see.” I entered the temple and saw the deity Shankara
with the same diamond pen and the same dress. Tears filled
my eyes. So much gratitude flowed. I asked them who put
the pen on the deity and was told that one of the devotees,
a goldsmith had made it specially for the Lord. It was one
of a kind.
The very quality of your Inner Space can
create miracles in your life. The power to create miracles
is what I call the ‘power of coincidence’. We
just have to open and trust that our Consciousness is connected
to the universe, that the Divine is continually caring for
you.
Just as you create your world in the dream state, you have
the power to create your world in the waking state. When
you reside in Universal Consciousness, you attract the power
of coincidence.
The greatest miracle is not turning water
into wine. We have enough vineyards accomplishing this.
The greatest miracle is transforming man into Divine. Bliss
attracts fortune. There are three basic elements that create
fortune or wealth: clarity of thought, creativity and responsibility,
the ability to respond spontaneously. All three create and
preserve wealth. If you enter into bliss, all these three
will happen to you. When you cultivate the blissful state,
when you care for your Inner Space in this way, you are
a blessing to Existence, and it showers its gratitude on
you.
Krishna says, “Whatever you offer
me, I will accept.” When we give to the Divine, we
express a willing attitude to connect to it. You invite
the Divine into your Inner Space. And when this happens,
automatically your outer space is taken care of. If you
see the world as purely material, you fight it; you feel
at odds with it. The moment you realize that you are one
with it, that you are part of the Whole, you relax into
Enlightenment. This sloka is the lazy man’s
guide to enlightenment.
The moment you relax into Eternal
Bliss, you are taken care of, naturally. You will experience
the Inner and outer space with Bliss - Nithyananda.
